 Hawaii Five-0 - Loa Aloha

Five-0 must find a bomber out for revenge before he can set more bombs and kill more people. Danny's brother Matt is in town but a family reunion isn't the reason.

Full Recap
In the Kawailoa Forest Reserve, people are having fun gliding through the air on a rope pulley. A man asks his daughter how she talked him into it, and she tells him he has to do something for his sixtieth birthday. As she gets strapped in and pushes off the man gets a call. The caller knows he's Judge Kamalei and notes his daughter's quite an adventurer. He asks what the last thing he said to her was before she left the platform and hopes he said goodbye. As he's talking, the rope snaps and the judge's daughter falls straight down into the forest.

Danny is getting out of an elevator with Grace and asks if she's excited to see her Uncle Matt. She is and adds he's the coolest ever and Danny tells he thought himself to be the coolest ever. Grace knocks on the door of a hotel room and a voice on the other side tells her to come in. They go in and don't see anyone but a large pile of gifts on a table. Danny's younger brother Matt pops up from behind it and gives Grace a hug. He then hugs Danny who tells him it's been too long as he's already been in Hawaii for a year. Matt tells him he can't believe he moved to Hawaii and Danny looks at Grace and says it was worth it. Matt asks how things are with Rachel and Danny leads him away from Grace and says they are better and he and Rachel can have civil conversations. He asks what Matt is doing in Hawaii and Matt insists he's just there for fun and adds Danny is a spoil sport with a lack of adventurous spirit. Danny gets a call and tells Matt he has to go to work and opts to take Grace back to Rachel's, but Matt offers to watch her. This surprises Danny but Matt insists they can hang out for the day and meet Danny for dinner.

Steve is on the platform in the reserve and calls Chin and tells him they need to expand the grid search to a half mile radius as he found the end of the zipline is charred and thinks it was an explosive. He also found evidence of an electronic trigger. He tells Chin for someone to blow the zipline out, they would've had to have been close. On the ground, Chin takes a picture of tire tread marks. Kono asks Judge Kamalei what he remembers about the call. Judge Kamalei says it was from an unknown number and he had a thin, raspy voice he didn't recognize, but the caller knew who he was. He thinks the caller was watching them, as one minute his daughter was waving goodbye, and then... he goes to collect himself. Kono notes he's single father with one kid and Danny adds he lost all the family he has. Kono asks if he thinks the daughter was a target or collateral damage. Danny thinks the phone call makes her the target and the killer was taunting him. Danny orders a full protective detail on the judge as the killer's probably not done.

At headquarters, Chin shows them the pictures of the tire tracks he found in an area that's off limits to vehicles and they're recent and well within sight of the platform. They look to be from an SUV or a light pick-up truck. Danny couldn't trace the call made to the judge, but the fragments Steve found were from an RF receiver usually found in walkie-talkies or remote control cars. Kono has been trying to find the judge's thread file, which are any written or verbal threats against him. So they're looking for someone male, violent and has an ax to grind. Chin adds anyone who puts away hardened criminals will have a deep suspect pool. Upon seeing how deep, Steve says they have to narrow it down and buff up the judge's security detail so they'll be ready when the killer comes back for the judge.

Steve has made sure the judge is secure and Danny and Kono are going to see the prosecutor tomorrow. In the meantime, Steve is going with Danny to pick up Grace, much to Danny's confusion. Steve is curious about Danny's brother and Danny warns him he has quite the personality...disorder. They see Matt with Grace and Rachel and Matt waves them over. Danny asks Rachel why she's there and Matt tells Danny he invited her as it's been a long time since they've all been together. Danny introduces Steve to Matt and Rachel asks if Danny's staying. Danny asks where Stan is, but he's away on business as usual. Steve tells him to stay but he'll leave but Matt invites him to stay as well. Danny and Steve pull up chairs to the table.
They are there long enough the sun sets and they're all still sitting around the table. Danny and Matt are telling stories while a guy at the bar keeps a wary eye on them. Grace has fallen asleep and Danny mutters to Steve that the two guys at the bar, one of them came out of Matt's room in a waiter's uniform and the two guys are getting up, so Steve and Danny do as well. They go after the men and catch up with them in the lobby. They both have FBI badges and Danny asks what he wants with Matt and the agent tells him it's an active investigation. Steve whips out his phone and calls the governor, but the agents think he's bluffing. Steve hands the phone over to him and he still doesn't believe it, but the governor yells at him and he apologizes and hangs up. He then tells Danny Matt is being accused of defrauding his investors out of millions of dollars. Danny tells them his brother runs a hedge fund and tells them they're wrong. The agent tells him it's their job to make sure he doesn't go overseas before he gets indicted. He hands Danny a card and adds they'll prosecute him for obstruction if he says anything to his brother. The agents walk away and Danny begins to pace. He tells Steve his brother may be a lot of things, but a criminal isn't one of them. Steve says he could've been set up and Danny tells him after he and Rachel split, he started staying at a motel and Matt would come over every night. They would talk and drink and Matt would go to work the next morning and did this every day for six months. He adds he wouldn't have gotten through it if not for Matt and he didn't do this. Steve believes him but tells him he has to talk to his brother, family comes first.

Kono introduces Steve to deputy prosecutor James Chen. Chen gives Steve Kamalei's threat file and tells him Kamalei is what's known as a hanging judge, he's put away a lot of violent offenders and not many get back out. Steve asks if any stand out and Chen tells him a Drew Pirizzi fits the bill. He rigged his ex's house to burn down after she dumped him. He also attacked the judge in open court and it took a bailiff and two armed guards to restrain him. And he got parole two weeks ago. Chen tells them Pirizzi is staying at an old girlfriend in the Wahiawa apartment complex.

Steve and Chin are on both sides of the apartment door. Chen is saying goodbye to his son as he gets into his car. Chen then gets a call from the same person who called the judge and has a similar conversation to the one he had with the judge. Chen begs him not to do it and the caller says he hopes he said goodbye as Chin and Steve burst in on Pirizzi in bed with his girlfriend, and Chen watches his son's car burst into flames.

At the crime scene, Steve picks up a piece of rubble. Chin remarks it couldn't have been Pirizzi as they were with him when the bomb went off and the remote detonate trigger, the bomber had to have been close by. Kono has got a bag full of cameras and cell phones from tourists who were around when the bomb went off. Steve adds now they have to look at cases with Chen and Kamalei. Kono wonders if it's about revenge, why not go after them, but target their kids?

Matt is on the phone in his hotel room when Danny comes in. He's surprised to see Danny and Danny asks if he's doing business. Matt tells him it's a new client who lives on the north shore and Danny points out he's on vacation and asks about the new client. Matt tells him his current clients told the new clients about him and as he talks, Danny takes a picture of a card that reads "Waioleka Charters" on his coffee table. Matt comes back in the room and asks why he's asking so many questions. He tells Danny he has meet the new client right now and they can hang later.

Kono cross referenced Kamalei's threat file with cases both he and Chen had in common, focusing on violent offenders and parolees. When she didn't find any matches, she focused on the cameras and cell phones she collected at the scene of the crime. Several tourists took pictures right before or after the explosion at different angles. Steve clarifies the killer might be in one of the photos and Kono adds with the tire prints they're looking for an SUV. Steve spots a red SUV in one picture and when Kono blows it up, he sees the wheel wells are all muddy and the tire matches the treads found in the forest. Kono didn't get a shot of the plates, but sees what could be a rental tag on the bumper. Steve gets a call from Danny who tells him he's going to be a while. Steve asks what Danny's going to do and doesn't believe Danny when he answers nothing. Steve tells him not to go anywhere and he'll be there soon.

Chin shows a picture of a piece of rubble to a girl in a shop and asks if she sold any lately. She tells him a haole came in last week and bought three and he had a dark hair and a goatee. He calls Kono and fills her in and tells her the remote control planes have a range of a 1000 feet and Kono says it looks like they have one less target.

In Kahala neighborhood, Danny and Steve are tailing Matt. Danny tells Steve to slow down but Steve tells him he wouldn't recognize the truck and they stop when Matt pulls in a driveway. Danny calls the number off the card on Matt's table and finds Matt doesn't have a listing but they fly out of a Hawaiian airport. Danny puts headphones on and holds up a funnel and laments it's sick he's doing this as Matt knocks on the door. He can hear him now and watches as a man frisks Matt and another man invites him in. There is some static and Danny loses the sound. Steve asks what's going on and Danny tells him Matt told him he was going to a business meeting but gets patted down before a business meeting? Steve answers, someone who doesn't want to get caught.

Danny goes to the hotel where he finds Rachel, Grace and Matt. Danny asks Matt how his meeting went and he tells him it went really well and Rachel picks up on a vibe and her and Grace get up. Grace heads out to the water, but Rachel hangs back and listens to Danny ask Matt if he helps the rich get out of their taxes. Matt tells him he'd like to help get everyone out of their taxes, not just the rich. Matt tells Danny he's kidding and to lighten up. Grace calls to him and he runs out and joins her in the water. Rachel sits down next to Danny and asks what's going on. Danny tries to brush it off but she can see through it and asks what's wrong. Danny looks out at Matt and Grace in the water and tells Rachel not to tell anyone, but the FBI is after Matt. Rachel asks if Danny believes he's guilty and Danny tells her he doesn't want to and he hasn't talked to Matt about it. Rachel tells him he needs to as Grace and Matt wave from the water.
In Matt's hotel room, Danny tells Matt he needs to talk to him about something. Matt thinks it's about Rachel and adds he knew Danny still had feelings for her when he saw them at dinner. Danny tells him it's not about Rachel and asks what's going on with Matt. Matt says nothing and asks why and Danny brings up the indictment. Matt goes on the defensive and Danny starts yelling at him for lying and Matt admits he took the money. Danny asks what he was thinking and now their parents and sisters will be involved. Matt tells him he made a mistake and adds Danny likes to be the guy people think does everything right, but he's made mistakes. Danny asks why, and Matt admits he lost $58 million in one day. He had to cover it, so he took some money from his other clients. He was hoping if he could cover his tracks, no one would know. Danny asks why he didn't come to him and Matt points out he's a cop and Danny retorts he's his brother first and he'd help him. Matt laments he thought about turning himself in but he couldn't. Danny asks why he came to Hawaii and Matt admits it was to cut another deal and try and buy his way out, but it fell through. Danny tells him they are going to New York and talking to the FBI and Matt will fess up to everything, and most likely go to jail. But Danny promises to talk to the district attorney and they'll get through it together. Matt says this will kill their parents, and Danny tells him to pack a bag and he'll be back in a couple hours.

Kono has cross checked red SUVs with cases involving Chen and Kamalei and found one match, a man named Travis Roan. He used to work on a construction site and spent years in a Wyoming prison for aggravate assault. Steve is confused, but Kono says his son was tried in Hawaii. Thomas Roan got 18 months for a DUI when he got stabbed in a mess hall fight and died in prison ten days ago. Chen and Kamalei were on his case, meaning Roan is looking for payback for his dead son. Kono tried to find another target, but all Kamalei remembered about the case was the flood of appeals that came after the verdict. The appeals came from Thomas's mom.

Steve and Chin go see Elizabeth Roan and fill her in on everything and Steve asks if she knows where Travis is. She thought he was back in Wyoming and tells them he was only in town for Thomas's funeral. She tells them Thomas couldn't wait to get out of Wyoming and thought of Hawaii as paradise, but got pulled over for a DUI his first semester. The judge and prosecutor had to make an example of him because it was the third DUI that week in Waikiki. Thomas was also underage and hit a fancy car, so he got eighteen months. Elizabeth moved down to Hawaii to appeal and her ex-husband took that hard as they wouldn't let him visit his son. She adds Thomas was only thirteen when his dad went to jail, and they wrote letters but hadn't seen each other since. Steve asks if there was anyone else Travis blamed for Thomas's death, but Elizabeth says no, the thing he kept saying at the funeral was he never got to say goodbye. Steve asks where Travis was staying.

Steve and Chin burst into the Kuhio beach motel but the room is empty. Steve notes the sink is wet and he was just here and shaved. Chin finds a photo of Thomas and letters from Thomas to his dad on the table. Steve looks under the bed and finds the airplane kits with one remote missing. In the letters, Chin finds they're always blaming someone named Meachum who convinced him to take the deal who was his lawyer.

Steve tells Danny Travis is after Brian Meachum, the public defender's kid and warns Danny to be careful, as Travis is unstable and carrying explosives.

At the middle school, Brian Meachum is looking for his backpack when Travis hands it to him. He says someone must be messing with him and to be sure to double check his homework.
Kono tells Steve she hasn't gotten ahold of Diane Meachum yet, and Steve tells her the planes have a range of 1000 feet so if she finds them, Travis can't be too far away. In the parking lot, Brian runs by Travis sitting in the red SUV. He reaches into his pocket and pulls out his cell phone. Brian gets into his mother's car right as her phone goes off. She answers it and Steve tells her to get out of the car and not to touch anything. They get out of the car and Kono hurries them away while Danny goes up to the window and faces Travis. Travis says Brian's only thirteen just like Thomas was when he got locked up. He reaches for the remote. He says Thomas is gone and he starts to cry. Danny grabs the remote and gets Travis out of the car.
Steve joins Danny sitting on the curb. Danny says he has to get back to his brother, who was going to run. Steve tells him he's sorry and offers a ride to the airport.

Night has fallen and Danny and Steve are approaching Matt's hotel room when they hear people saying he's not there. They get out their guns and go in and find the FBI there and the agent from before tells them to stand down. The agent asks Danny where Matt is and adds the phone's dead and he switched cars and he tipped them off before the deal went down. Steve asks what he's talking about and the agent shows him a video of Matt making a deal with the leader of cartel to launder his drug money. The meet was supposed to go down today and they were going to take him down when he had the money. The agent asks Danny, but Danny insists he doesn't know where he is. Steve tells Danny to tell the agent what he told him. He gives the agent a false location and the FBI leaves. Danny thanks Steve and heads out.

In his car, Danny gets Matt's voicemail. He pulls up and sees Matt about to get on a plane. He calls his name and brandishes his gun. Matt asks if he's going to shoot him and Danny asks what's the matter with him. Matt tells him he had no choice and Danny retorts he gave him a choice and Matt tells him it's not that simple and they'e not kids anymore. Danny tells him to turn himself in and Matt tells him he wouldn't survive prison, he's not strong enough, he's not Danny. Danny asks if it's getaway money, and Matt tells him he was trying to fix things. Danny asks if he's going to fly off and forget about him and Grace. They're his family. Matt tells him this ends one of two ways; Danny either shoots him or says goodbye. The brothers stare at each other until Danny puts down his gun. He watches forlorn as his brother gets on the plane and looks back at him. He goes inside and the door to the plane closes. Danny watches as the plane takes off into the night sky.

Rachel answers the door and finds Danny on her front step. Danny is on the verge of tears and tells her Matt's gone. He lost him. Rachel hugs him tightly.
